Things to do in The City of Roses

Pasadena has been home to Jackalope for over 5 years now. In that time we’ve grown quite fond of the city and the things that make it so unique and easy to love.

Here are a few of our faves:

NEXT UP:

APRIL 25TH & 26TH
10AM - 5PM

CENTRAL PARK
275 S RAYMOND AVE, PASADENA CA 91105

The Rose Parade

image.png

One of the things Pasadena is the most famous for has got to be the Rose Parade.

Insider tip - skip the cold and early morning, and go check out the floats up close after the parade has finished when they’re all parked for public viewing on Sierra Madre Blvd.

Hike Eaton Canyon

image.png

It’s always a mystery if there’s going to be a small trickle or a decent sized waterfall at the end of your hike. You won’t know until you get there!

The Huntington Library

huntington-1024x382.jpg

Nothing beats those gardens! Fun fact, the final phase of the Huntington’s Garden of Flowing Fragrance will make it one of the largest classical-style Chinese gardens in the world!

Explore Old Pasadena

image.png

Spend the afternoon shopping in Old Pasadena, where there’s a little bit of everything. Some of our favorite shops to check out: Gold Bug, Homage, and all of the cute spots within One Colorado’s cute courtyard.

Pasadena Playhouse

image.png

Mixing up some weekend activities with a live play at the Playhouse can be a great time for all. Pasadena Playhouse hosts events throughout the year in their beautiful theatre in the heart of Pasadena.

Grab A Bite To Eat

image.png

Pasadena has such a wide variety of food and drink options. Here are a few faves in different categories:

Me + Crepe is a wonderful twist on crepes. This Chinese street food is not to be missed. One spicy bbq pork crepe, please.

Eats on Madison (Formerly Kitchen United) has a little something for everyone. Best place for the family where no one can agree on what to eat. It’s takeout style, but there are tables to sit at should you want to eat on-site. Grab yourself a grilled cheese with a side of spicy tuna crispy rice while your buddy enjoys a gyro. Everyone’s happy.

Architecture

image.png

If you are a sucker for architecture, then take a ride through Pasadena and you will not be disappointed. From City Hall, to Frank Lloyd Wright and The Gamble House designed by Greene & Greene- Pasadena is full of architectural gems.

Norton Simon Museum

image.png

Previously known as the Pasadena Art Museum, the museum houses more then 11,000 objects making it known internationally.

Rose Bowl Flea

Screen Shot 2020-02-05 at 1.37.55 PM.png

When we want to go thrifting or score some vintage treasures, we look no further then to go to the Rose Bowl Flea. Happening the second Sunday of every month, the Rose Bowl flea is one of the most famous markets in the world.

Colorado Street Bridge

Screen Shot 2020-02-05 at 1.43.23 PM.png

I think one of the most beautiful views is from the Colorado Street Bridge! With its arches rising 150 feet, it was once regarded the highest concrete bridge in the world. I also may have a soft spot for it because the bridge was featured in Full House during a bungee jumping scene!

Things to do in Colorful Colorado

We love that we call Denver our second home and we can’t wait to be back there! If you have not yet visited not just Denver, but Colorado in general, you are missing out. We have rounded out our favorite must see things to do while you are in Colorful Colorado. Take a look and explore with us:

1. Visit Red Rocks: It is such a unique venue and hands down the most beautiful place to catch a concert or to enjoy Film on the Rocks. At most shows, I love to be close to the stage so I can really take in the action. However at Red Rocks, I prefer to be higher up so I can enjoy the scenery, especially if there is a lightening storm going on in the East. It will truly take your breath away and the concert will take second stage.

2. Explore the many breweries, street art, and galleries in the Rhino District: otherwise known as the River North Arts District. Utilizing many old warehouses and factories, this is one of my favorite areas to enjoy two of my favorite things, beer + art. There is also super cool street art around every turn, my favorite is Larimer Boy and Girl by artist Jeremy Burns at 27th and Larimer. Walk one direction and you see a girl, and walk the other to see a boy.

3. Take a tour of Coors Brewery in Golden: not only do you get free beers, it is really fun to see behind the scenes of the beer making process. Fun fact, it is the largest single site brewery facility!

4. Tubing down Clear Creek: One of my favorite summertime activities, and it is free! Golden is a great place to do a quick getaway to, even if it is just for the afternoon. And once you need to break from the rapids, head to Old Capital Grille for sustenance- shout out to their Chocolate cake, best ever! And on your way out of Golden, stop by Period Six Boutique to shop handmade/local goods.

5. Enjoy Colorado’s take on Mexican food: they have their own spin on Tex-Mex and it is good! Say it with me, chili chili chili chili and if anything has the option to come smothered, do it- and please get the green chili. Oh and if breakfast is your thing, you have to get a breakfast burrito from El Lucerito in Aurora or Santiagos!

6. Enjoy the fall foliage: Colorado is one of my favorites places to be in the fall, the leaves are beyond gorgeous. This is also the perfect time to head to the mountains to enjoy the scenery and get your last hike in before the snow falls! Estes Park is a quick trip from the city, or if you want to venture further up, Breckinridge is personally my favorite mountain town.

7. Visit the Denver Art Museum: One of the largest art museums between the West coast and Chicago, the Denver Art Museum is home to 70,000 works of art. They always have great exhibitions and currently have the Monet exhibit going on- I mean come on!

8. Explore the smaller Denver- metro neighborhoods that pack just as big of a punch as Denver itself: Tennyson is an awesome area just outside of Denver that has a ton of restaurants, breweries of course, and fun shops! Shout out to XO Gift Co and Jolly Goods who both feature handmade local artisans there. Downtown Littleton is also a great spot to getaway to that also has small town charm, and shout out to Willow- an artisans boutique, who also features great handmade goodies. If you don’t want to venture out of Denver but still want the shop small experience, we recommend South Broadway or West Highlands.

9. Take in Garden of the Gods: Experience the 300’ towering sandstone rock formations and try not to gasp! Bring a bike, pack a lunch and take a ride through the park.

10. Visit Denver Biscuit Company: Denver Biscuit Company has a location along Tennyson and of course at Stanley Marketplace who we also have to mention as a must be place to stop. Enjoy a hearty breakfast at Denver Biscuit Company with their mouth watering biscuits and then explore the marketplace with their fun shops and yes, even a brewery ;)

Fun Facts About Our Cities

As we gear up for our sixth year, we want to celebrate the cities we call home with some interesting facts about each of them.

The Cheeseburger Legend

Rumored to have been created in 1924 by a 16 year old at his father’s restaurant, The Rite Spot, in Pasadena.

However, the name “cheeseburger” was trademarked in 1935 in Denver CO.

So… where did the cheeseburger really originate? Pasadena, Denver, or somewhere in between? One thing we know is, it probably wasn’t in Burbank.

Holidays in our cities

Every New Year is marked with the famous Rose Parade in Pasadena. Ever since it began, organizers have promised never to hold the parade on a Sunday in exchange with a pact with God that it not rain out the parade. In it’s 130 years, the parade has yet to be rained out!

Later in the year, where can you find one of the largest St. Patricks day parades? I bet you did not know that Denver has one of the largest parades in the country! Celebrate Irish culture and the start of Spring.

We are all about supporting local artisans and we would consider Norton's Winter Wonderland in Burbank as one of them! This fabulous Christmas display has been going on for more than 50 years. There are more than a dozen handmade displays including a ferris wheel, see-saw, train, angels, and carousel within.

Historic Locations

Pasadena Ice House is the oldest comedy club in the US. It’s also home to the first ever Trader Joe’s (with the world’s tiniest parking lot), and Vroman’, the longest independent bookstore which has been open for over 120 years.

The oldest remaining Bob’s Big Boy is in Burbank and was officially declared a historic landmark in 1993.

Meanwhile, Denver is home to the unsinkable Molly Brown’s house! The activist and philanthropist who survived the historical sinking of the Titanic.

On the big screen

Home to three major motion picture studios, Burbank could be named the movie capital of the world. It is also home to Walt Disney Animation studios who released the first fully animated film, 1937’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs!

Pasadena plays home to many on the big screen: The Gamble House = Doc Brown’s house in Back to the Future, Pasadena City Hall = HQ for Parks and Rec, Pasadena Central Library = The Law Library in Legally Blonde, and many more!

We can’t count Denver out though- Die Hard 2 was filmed at the old Stapleton Airport, and the stadium in Blades of Glory is the Pepsi Center. Yippee-ki-yay!

Animals

What’s with the squawking? Wild parrots fill Pasadena and urban legend has it that the exotic flock began with birds that escaped a burning pet store, or were released from Busch Gardens when it closed.

You wouldn’t expect horseback riding to be so popular in the middle of the city, but Burbank is home to a large equestrian park and provides over 50 miles of trails!

Denver is the city of dogs. No, really! It was reported that Denver has more dogs than children. There were about 158,000 dogs in Denver, and only 140,000 children according to the last U.S Census.

Downtown Burbank Street Murals

One thing we noticed right away when we first took a walk down San Fernando Boulevard in the heart of Downtown Burbank was the street art. From large scale murals front and center, to smaller pieces down an alley, the cities love for art was prevalent. With the 17th annual Downtown Burbank Arts Festival coming up this May, (our second year joining in!) we want to highlight a few of our favorite pieces. As you’ll see, our own mascot, Stanley, makes a debut in each of the pieces during our stroll too, can you spot him?!

Much of the street art found in Downtown was commissioned by Blank Canvas LA. An outdoor media company who specializes in handmade murals and custom designs.

First stop on our mural tour would be any instagrammers paradise. Be sure to check out the “Burbank” mural on the side of Starbucks (Palm/ San Fernando Boulevard), see above photo. The bright colors in contrast with the jet black outline makes this one of our favorites. You can spot additional flower art by the Make-up Design School!

Another one of our favorites is the “Burbank Hillside”. We loved it so much we even used it for our event promotion teasing where we would pop up next. This one is not as obvious to find- see if you can locate it in May ;)

IMG_3812.jpeg

The most recent mural from Blank Canvas LA can be found at the Burbank Town Center. Playing tribute to the cities history and its entertainment routes- this has quickly become a must see piece.

Screen Shot 2020-01-14 at 3.50.45 PM.png

And finally, we need to mention “Made in Burbank.” We are suckers for supporting local and small business, so of course we love this ode to just that. This mural is also not as obvious to spot so make sure to fully immerse yourself to every twist and turn- even if that means taking a break to recharge at one of the many restaurants along the way.

We hope to see you out this May at the 17th annual Downtown Burbank Arts Festival, May 16th & 17th from 11am-7pm each day. Come see over 200 handmade artisans and animators spread out amongst four blocks from Magnolia to Angeleno!

Jackalope Indie Artisan Fair 2019: A Year In Review

2019 has been a year of change and growth for Melissa, Sara, and Jackalope!

In May, Jackalope added a new location and took on Burbank as part of the long running Downtown Burbank Arts Festival! The fair was a success and we are very excited to be back in Burbank May 16th & 17th, 2020 for their 17th year.

Then that next week (literally!), Jackalope got a new team member. Sara and her husband Pete, welcomed baby boy Wells! Wells can be found helping mom and dad shop artisan booths during the fair.

And if that is not enough, that same week Melissa moved to Minnesota! Melissa and her husband Brian, purchased their first home in South Minneapolis. As Melissa is preparing herself for the winter chill- she is having a fun time exploring the handmade arts scene in the city and has attended several makers markets!

Next up Jackalope returned to Central Park, Old Pasadena for Jackalope Summer Nights in August and our Fall Fair in November. We will be back in Pasadena for our Spring fair April 25th & 26th, 2020.

For Small Business Saturday weekend, Jackalope hosted a pop up shopping event in the basement of Grand Central Market! We had a blast celebrating small business and the holiday season kick off.

78223377_1253318684870914_1241203762807177216_o.jpg

Our final fair of the year was in Denver where this year we called Stanley Marketplace home and we had a blast. We had artisan booths on both the first and second floors truly creating an immersive shopping experience for all!

As we look to a new year, we want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who was a part of our artisan community and to all the shoppers who support them. We hope everyone has a happy new year and we look forward to seeing you in 2020!
