Things to do in Colorful Colorado

We love that we call Denver our second home and we can’t wait to be back there! If you have not yet visited not just Denver, but Colorado in general, you are missing out. We have rounded out our favorite must see things to do while you are in Colorful Colorado. Take a look and explore with us:

1. Visit Red Rocks: It is such a unique venue and hands down the most beautiful place to catch a concert or to enjoy Film on the Rocks. At most shows, I love to be close to the stage so I can really take in the action. However at Red Rocks, I prefer to be higher up so I can enjoy the scenery, especially if there is a lightening storm going on in the East. It will truly take your breath away and the concert will take second stage.

2. Explore the many breweries, street art, and galleries in the Rhino District: otherwise known as the River North Arts District. Utilizing many old warehouses and factories, this is one of my favorite areas to enjoy two of my favorite things, beer + art. There is also super cool street art around every turn, my favorite is Larimer Boy and Girl by artist Jeremy Burns at 27th and Larimer. Walk one direction and you see a girl, and walk the other to see a boy.

3. Take a tour of Coors Brewery in Golden: not only do you get free beers, it is really fun to see behind the scenes of the beer making process. Fun fact, it is the largest single site brewery facility!

4. Tubing down Clear Creek: One of my favorite summertime activities, and it is free! Golden is a great place to do a quick getaway to, even if it is just for the afternoon. And once you need to break from the rapids, head to Old Capital Grille for sustenance- shout out to their Chocolate cake, best ever! And on your way out of Golden, stop by Period Six Boutique to shop handmade/local goods.

5. Enjoy Colorado’s take on Mexican food: they have their own spin on Tex-Mex and it is good! Say it with me, chili chili chili chili and if anything has the option to come smothered, do it- and please get the green chili. Oh and if breakfast is your thing, you have to get a breakfast burrito from El Lucerito in Aurora or Santiagos!

6. Enjoy the fall foliage: Colorado is one of my favorites places to be in the fall, the leaves are beyond gorgeous. This is also the perfect time to head to the mountains to enjoy the scenery and get your last hike in before the snow falls! Estes Park is a quick trip from the city, or if you want to venture further up, Breckinridge is personally my favorite mountain town.

7. Visit the Denver Art Museum: One of the largest art museums between the West coast and Chicago, the Denver Art Museum is home to 70,000 works of art. They always have great exhibitions and currently have the Monet exhibit going on- I mean come on!

8. Explore the smaller Denver- metro neighborhoods that pack just as big of a punch as Denver itself: Tennyson is an awesome area just outside of Denver that has a ton of restaurants, breweries of course, and fun shops! Shout out to XO Gift Co and Jolly Goods who both feature handmade local artisans there. Downtown Littleton is also a great spot to getaway to that also has small town charm, and shout out to Willow- an artisans boutique, who also features great handmade goodies. If you don’t want to venture out of Denver but still want the shop small experience, we recommend South Broadway or West Highlands.

9. Take in Garden of the Gods: Experience the 300’ towering sandstone rock formations and try not to gasp! Bring a bike, pack a lunch and take a ride through the park.

10. Visit Denver Biscuit Company: Denver Biscuit Company has a location along Tennyson and of course at Stanley Marketplace who we also have to mention as a must be place to stop. Enjoy a hearty breakfast at Denver Biscuit Company with their mouth watering biscuits and then explore the marketplace with their fun shops and yes, even a brewery ;)

What we LOVE about Denver

As we head into our fifth year hosting fairs in Denver, we want to take a moment and let you in on some of our favorite fun facts about the Mile High City!

Sunshine

Corey Anthony Photography

Corey Anthony Photography

Fun Fact: Something we love most about Denver is that it has over 300 days of sunshine per year! Denver has more annual hours of sunshine than San Diego and even Miami Beach.

Colfax Avenue

Fun Fact: Colfax Avenue is the longest commercial street in the USA just over 26 miles, and is home to a unique assortment of eateries, bars, and music venues! Playboy once referred to Colfax as "the longest, wickedest street in America."  One of our favorite landmarks are the neon signs that still exist on Colfax playing tribute to its past!

Beer!

38305130_2130013793707409_1498270650828062720_o.jpg

Fun Fact: The first permanent structure in Denver was a saloon, which makes sense since now there are over 75 breweries with a Denver address! It is no surprise that Denver hosts the largest beer fest in the nation, The Great American Beer Fest. Shoutout to Diebolt Brewing who has hosted our Denver Fair mixer the past 3 years.

Art

Fun Fact: There are seven art districts in Denver and over 70 galleries in Denver alone. This includes Rino, Golden Triangle, Arts District on Sante Fe, South Broadway, Cherry Creek North, South Pearl Street, Tennyson, and 40 West Arts District. We also love all the street art that is taking over the city making it one large art gallery.

The Brown Palace Hotel & Spa

Fun Fact: Except for Calvin Coolidge, every US President since Teddy Roosevelt has visited this famous landmark. Also unique, there is a bee colony on the roof and the honey is used for afternoon tea!

The Denver Mint

Screen Shot 2019-01-09 at 5.55.20 PM.png

Fun Fact: The Denver Mint is the single largest producer of coins in the world. You can tell if a coin is made in Denver by a D mark. I still remember the tour I took back in elementary school, a school staple growing up!

The Outdoors

Photo from Visit Denver

Photo from Visit Denver

Fun Fact: Yes we know Denver is not in the Mountains, however it is so close that the outdoor active lifestyle is still relevant. In fact there are 200 named peaks visible from Denver and the city boasts more than 5,000 acres of traditional parks and parkways.

Meet Zane Beadles Parade Foundation

At each Jackalope Denver event we select a nonprofit as our event beneficiary who betters the community and inspires us to do more.  Zane Beadles Parade Foundation does just that, and this Spring we are very excited to work with ZBPF, learn more about them below and come show your support on May 19th & 20th!

1. When was Zane Beadles Parade Foundation founded and why? In 2013, Zane Beadles – former Denver Bronco currently playing for the San Francisco 49ers – established the Zane Beadles Parade Foundation (ZBPF).  ZBPF is a non-profit organization focused on providing experiences to distract our pint-sized warriors from their daily treatments. Studies indicate the experiences patients receive outside of the hospital is just as important as the treatment they receive in the hospital and positive experiences can improve a patient’s quality of life, stress level and recovery.  In 2017 through our Greatest Gift program ZBPF has sent over 50 families in SF and Denver to cheer on the Denver Broncos and San Francisco 49ers, helped deliver 30 Bags of Fun with the Gabby Krause Foundation, hosted 4 pancake breakfasts and built a new Sports Court at Brent's Place, sponsored a Holiday Extravaganza at Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children for 50 families, and the Winterfest at Cherry Creek North

Zane Beadles with the Denver Broncos

Zane Beadles with the Denver Broncos

2. How did the name come about? While Zane was playing for the Denver Broncos the offensive line chose spirit animals.  The elephant was selected for Zane because of his size, he offers protection, strength, power, stability and wisdom.  Elephants offer good luck on a long hard journey and strength to make it through.  The elephant was selected to represent the foundation as the Zane Beadles Parade Foundation.  Zane believes life is about the journey not the destination and is dedicated to making the journey better for others.

Screen Shot 2018-01-29 at 11.25.18 AM.png

3. What makes ZBPF so unique and special? The foundation is a start up and Denver is the home of our Foundation.  ZBPF is special and unique because even though we were started in Denver, we continue to make an impact in Salt Lake City, UT where Zane played for the University of Utah, in Jacksonville Florida where Zane played for the Jaguars, and currently in the bay area as he plays for the SF 49ers. We are committed to collaboration, and partner with organizations to ensure a level of dignity and financial respite so that our partner’s can continue to offer all of their services to our families at no cost.  Frequently totaling more than $1 million per child, the expenses associated with oncology care are devastating to a families financial wellbeing.  Many families have been impoverished by their child’s disease; often a parent must stop working to care for their child.  The average income of our families is $50k – that is if both parents are able to keep their jobs.  The families we serve require a minimum stay in the hospital of 120 days and incur more than $10k in expenses.  ZBPF’s goal is to raise funds to assist the families with their expenses as well as provide programming opportunities and experiences they would not otherwise have the opportunity to enjoy!

Screen Shot 2018-02-02 at 2.42.59 PM.png

4. Why are you excited to partner with Jackalope this Spring? Because the festival is also a start up started by 2 hip, fun girls with a strong desire to give back to the community! Our values strongly align and we admire the fact Jackalope gives artists a chance to make a difference.  Also, our families love art and it is used as a form of therapy for them.  This will give ZBPF a chance to increase our exposure in the community as well as collect much needed art supplies to put in the newly established Zane's Zone-these Zones will be no procedure zones and allow the kids to just be kids!  The Zone will also have an adult area in order to provide a place for them to work and spend more time at the hospital with their children.

22195558_1609662385814993_2234954788747191435_n.jpg

5. Where can we learn more about ZBPF and how can we help? On our new website at www.zanesparade.org.  You can help us spread the word about all the wonderful work we are doing in Denver, Salt Lake City and San Francisco!

Meet Denver Juror: Kiley with Period Six Studio
Screen Shot 2018-01-10 at 5.23.13 PM.png

1. How did you get your start in the handmade community?  I’ve been drawn to creating and promoting handmade creations from a young age. When I was younger, I’d go to work with my mom who was a graphic designer and worked in an office full of women owned businesses. There I’d sit under her desk and draw…sometimes on the walls… and make things from everyday objects. I was incredibly fortunate that the designers, architects, and other professional women in the office would buy my colored paperclips and eraser sculptures and show me what it was like to support each other and the joy of having someone want something made by hand. This feeling of community around creation was present through my college experience where I studied theatre – the art of creating what you need because there’s never enough in the budget to “just go buy it.” I also started working for an American craft artist/ gallery at that time and fell in love with the idea of art being accessible for anyone.

2. What/Who is your biggest inspiration? My biggest inspiration is my mom,  Ann, who is the other half of Period Six Studio. She always taught me that people, no matter how different, have shared experiences and their stories are worth listening to and retelling.

Screen Shot 2018-01-10 at 5.23.41 PM.png

3. Tell us a few favorites of yours (animal, tv show, weekend activity, food etc)? A few of my favorite things… polka dots, rusty things, my dog Malcolm and husband Toby, Gilmore Girls, Broadway musicals, and a beer & chocolate combo to top off a day of bump skiing.

4. What do you love most about the handmade movement?  My favorite part of the handmade movement is seeing how people who where displaced from jobs in the recession or found that there were no jobs for them out of college have carved out places for themselves. By taking nontraditional career paths they’ve had to build upon what lights them up. I feel privileged watching aritsts grow and change and feel honored when they trust us to tell their stories.

Screen Shot 2018-01-10 at 5.23.25 PM.png

5. What is the most important feature in an artists application for you? For me the work itself is the most important feature. The joy, thoughtfulness and attention to detail is all reflected in the work itself. That being said, make sure there’s good pictures to represent it in the best light.

6. What are you looking forward to the most in joining the jury panel with Jackalope? I am excited to join the jury panel to meet other people who share my passion of the handmade and to see the scope of what people are creating!

Denver Vendor Spotlight: Buckley Omega
Screen Shot 2017-11-09 at 5.43.03 PM.png

1. How did you get your start in the handmade community?

I like art. I like Colorado. I like fashion. I like t-shirts. There you go.

2. What do you feel makes your work unique and truly your own?

I try to test the boundaries of what local street wear can be. Representing Colorado and pushing what is acceptable a little bit.

Screen Shot 2017-11-09 at 5.48.16 PM 1.png

3. What or Who Inspires you?

I get inspiration from all over. The great art scene in Denver, the beautiful Rocky Mountains, everyday life in general.

Screen Shot 2017-11-09 at 5.43.39 PM.png

4. What is your creative process like?

It varies from sketching and going through various outcomes and ideas to jumping straight on the computer and designing.

5. What is the coolest artistic tip you have ever received?

Don't be afraid to fail.

Screen Shot 2017-11-09 at 5.47.05 PM.png

6. What can we expect to see from you at Jackalope?

Sweet t-shirts, sweaters, beanies and other random, radical things.

7. Where can we learn more about you? https://www.buckleyomega.com/

Denver Vendor Spotlight: Olander Co Embroidery
Screen Shot 2017-10-27 at 5.25.03 PM.png

1. How did you get your start in the handmade community?

I got my BFA from Colorado State University in 2012 and have been working in the arts ever since. I was mainly working with drawing and installation mediums and showing in galleries. Last summer I found myself without a studio for the first time and had just welcomed home my first baby so I decided it was time to explore a new medium. Embroidery became a clear avenue because it is essentially drawing with thread. I wanted to learn and perfect a simple craft so I took up embroidery and quickly became addicted.

2. What do you feel makes your work unique and truly your own?

There are a lot of embroidery artists working right now. My work is unique in that it's specific to Colorado. I focus on the landscapes, plants and animals that occupy our land in an effort to better understand this land. My work is also a lot more minimal that some embroidery artists. I love to use negative space to amplify the focus on my subject.

Screen Shot 2017-10-27 at 5.25.59 PM.png

3. What or Who Inspires you?

There are two people whose works I come back to over and over again in my pursuit of understanding of our land; Wendell Berry and Andrew Wyeth. Berry's writing is grounded in understanding the functions and beauty of cultivating our land and working with it instead of against it. Wyeth's paintings are mainly landscapes, but what makes his work important to me is that it's all focused mainly on one place. We live in a culture where it's more normal to move around from place to place, school to school rather than becoming anchored with the land and family we've come from. In my life, I seek to find beauty in the staying in one place and Andrew Wyeth's paintings show how studying one place for a length of time produces an insight and beauty impossible to fake.

4. What is your creative process like?

I usually begin with my sketchbook. I'll create a few sketches and ideas for my hoops and then transfer them to fabric.

Screen Shot 2017-10-27 at 5.25.41 PM.png

5. What is the coolest artistic tip you have ever received?

It might be more "practical" than "cool" but someone once told me to find a way to make your work sustainable in your day to day life and stick to it.

6. What can we expect to see from you at Jackalope?

I will have a few holiday themed pieces such as ornaments, and a bulk of my work will be studies of the plants and animals of Colorado.

Screen Shot 2017-10-27 at 5.25.49 PM.png

7. Where can we learn more about you?

Denver Vendor Spotlight: Fox Hill Baby
Screen Shot 2017-10-03 at 4.37.09 PM.png

1. How did you get your start in the handmade community?

I got started in the handmade community in 2011. I had just had my first baby (Hill) and was back at work in my social services job 6 weeks after he was born. I decided to open an Etsy store to sell baby blankets with a goal of being able to stay home 1 day a week with him. I met that goal within just a few months and was able to quit my full time job the following year, just 18 months after I opened my store.

2. What do you feel makes your work unique and truly your own?

I have always enjoyed the process of curating the fabrics I use in my store to pick fun and unique designs that would be hard to find anywhere else. I also very recently have started to design my own fabrics and am currently making the transition to just using my own designs. I have them printed on various base fabrics through Spoonflower, which is an amazing digital fabric printer located in North Carolina. I love that I can keep most of my supplies made in the USA. You won't find too many in my online shop as I am making that transition because I am stocking up for the Jackalope show while selling off my current inventory!

Screen Shot 2017-10-03 at 4.37.22 PM.png

3. What or Who Inspires you?

My biggest inspiration are my two boys, Hill and Fox. I would have never had the guts to quit my job and make my living as a creative if not for my extreme desire to be home with them. They also get to test my new products and help me decide what is the best kid approved stuff for my shop.

4. What is your creative process like?

My creative process starts with sketching my ideas/motifs for a design and then taking them in to adobe illustrator to digitize them and set them in to a repeat. Once I am happy with the colors and scale I upload them to Spoonflower who then ships me my awesome new fabrics!  All of the cutting and sewing is done in my home studio, where you can find me sewing while watching Supernatural, Dr. Who, The Office or any British mystery show. Netflix is my best sewing friend!

Screen Shot 2017-10-03 at 4.37.32 PM.png

5. What is the coolest artistic tip you have ever received?

The best tip I have ever received was in an art business class, and it is something that you hear all the time. It was just to be yourself. Nobody else sees the world as you do or is going to draw (or whatever creative thing you do) the same way you do. You don't have to try to appeal to everyone because if you are true to yourself you will find your people :)

6. What can we expect to see from you at Jackalope?

I am bringing blankets for babies and big kids, clothing, bibs, burp cloths and bags.

Screen Shot 2017-10-03 at 4.37.51 PM.png

7. Where can we learn more about you?

You can follow along on our instagram @foxhillbaby and shop our online store foxhillbaby.com or find us on Etsy
