Meet Erva Brew Co.

Do you have a story behind your company name?

Our name actually has a double meaning - not only is it half of the name "Minerva-" goddess of wisdom and trade, but also in Portugese, "Erva Mate" means "yerba mate," which is the herb we specialize in. As our menu draws inspiration from around the globe, so does our name.

Please tell us how you got started?

We started as a full-service farm-to-festival concessions business. When we saw how popular our "ginger mate limeade" was, we were really inspired to share the unique joy of yerba mate with as many people as possible. We flipped over our "Veggie Burgers" banner, painted "Ginger Mate Limeade" on the other side, and went to the farmers' market.

That is awesome! Do you have a favorite part of the maker process?

Our favorite part is witnessing the transformation of our yerba mate bases into the refreshing and delicious elixirs we're known for.

What inspires you to create?

The challenge of introducing people to a new flavor they may not have tried before is what gets our creative juices flowing.

Do you have a favorite flavor you have created?

The Tulsi-Passion is probably our favorite item because it has a great depth of flavor that is unparalleled.

Oh intriguing! What is a typical day like in the studio for you?

A typical day includes a lot of measuring, mixing, pouring, and taste testing.

Sounds fun and tasty! What do you love most about California?

We love California for its diverse topography: nowhere else can you find beaches, mountains, and deserts within driving distance. We especially love Pasadena for being so welcoming to our first brick-and-mortar storefront.

Located at 2377 E. Colorado Blvd Pasadena, CA 91107

Yes congratulations on that achievement! Do you have anything special that you will be bringing to Jackalope?

We will be bringing our classic menu, and maybe a fall-themed surprise seasonal flavor.

We can’t wait to see you in person this November 20th & 21st when Jackalope returns to Central Park, Pasadena.

Meet Gogh Jewelry Design
Szilvia - Gogh.jpg

To start us off, tell us more about Gogh Jewelry Design;

I’m Szilvia Gogh, founder of Gogh Jewelry Design. I’m a professional SCUBA diver, stuntwoman, yogi, cancer survivor and mom. I started my jewelry design business 20 years ago because I love beautiful things, but as an active woman, I couldn’t find any silver jewelry inspired by the sea, that was both meaningful and functional - so I started creating jewelry myself. I wanted to wear jewelry that reflects my passion for the ocean, my love for travel and jewelry that keeps my positive outlook on life.

Please tell us how you got started?

My friends and family were always skeptical when I shared my visions and dreams about traveling the world and making a living of my passions: scuba diving and creating jewelry. I didn’t want to end up like most people around me. They also had amazing dreams and visions, but ended up living in “reality.”

I did not want my potentials and opportunities pass me by. My source desire is to be happy in my own skin. I believe that living out our dreams is the key to long lasting happiness. And at the end of the day, we all want to live happy – even during a pandemic 😉

My individually crafted pieces are meant to reflect your journey through life and help you gain the confidence you deserve.

affirmations-in-a-row-IG-2.jpg

Can you expand more on why your jewelry is healing?

My individually crafted jewelry is simple, yet elegant with uplifting messages and healing gemstones, meant to be worn every day and made to last a lifetime.
Every piece of Gogh jewelry is a reflection of free will, love for life and the experiences we face. Each necklace, bracelet or set of earrings is made of pieces of the earth that I find during my travels. I put my heart and soul into my creations in the hope that they make you feel beautiful and empowered.

✨My source desire: to be happy in my own skin and help others find long lasting happiness too.✨

Do you have a favorite part of the maker process?

IG-GJD-leather-button-mermaid-pearl-bracelet-beach-toes.jpg

Finding a cool piece of gemstone or seeing something that inspires me and come up with a piece. I do not draw or plan, I usually just jump in, try this, try that... until I love the piece and wear it.

What inspires you to create?

LIFE and my part in the big picture. I marvel Mother Nature’s creativity, the colorful and even bizarre critters. As time passes, my mind tunes out the every-day-thoughts and I truly enjoy each and every moment.

Sometimes I see exciting animals, such as sharks, dolphins or octopus, dive ship wrecks or under ice. But, even a dive in a murky lake with nothing really to see - fills my soul with the energy of the water.

Being underwater is like living in another dimension of my life. Beneath the water is actually the one place where I can switch off my mind and not think. Some call it a meditation 😉

Empowerment through teaching people scuba diving and the jewelry I create - has always been important for me. It’s all about being confident in your own skin and not to yearn to be someone else, live somewhere else or look like somebody famous...

Do you have a favorite piece you have created?

master-healer-necklace-12.jpg

My current favorites are: Master Healer Crystal Necklace with Healing Gemstones. When I am wearing this necklace, I feel that I am getting all the help I need. I am experiencing a change that comes from within, always working on the energies I happen to lack at the moment. When I am stressed out, I feel the calming of Amethyst. When I am fed up with a situation, I feel that Labradorite is bringing a positive change in my direction. When I need to feel my amazon women power, I rub on the Amazonite beads. And of course, I can always use the protection that Jasper brings in and the luck that comes with Turquoise.

What is a typical day like in the studio for you?

I work in my home studio. So I get up 6-7ish, grab my cafe and start my day with my crystals while the house is quiet. I’m also a professional SCUBA diver and stuntwoman, so there are days when I am in the water. There are days when I design the new pieces, make them, photograph them... it really depends on the day ;-)

What do you love most about California?

The weather, the opportunities, the diversity. I came here for 2 weeks, 20 years ago ;-) As a matter of fact my first job was in Burbank and I lived in Pasadena. I even took some fun classes in the Pasadena City College and achieved a Photojournalism Degree.

A woman of many talents! Is there anything special you would like to add?!

Wear some creativity while helping children explore theirs!

Gogh Jewelry Design is a unique line of stunning jewelry made from nature’s most basic elements that inspires, gives back and celebrates life.
If the unique design of this jewelry doesn’t evoke these feelings, perhaps their purpose will. One percent of all Gogh Jewelry Design sales go to support projects by funding beads and jewelry making supplies for disadvantaged kids in gang influenced areas in Los Angeles

We can’t wait to see you in person this November 20th & 21st when Jackalope returns to Central Park, Pasadena.

Meet The Knotty Disco
Head Shot.jpg

Do you have a story behind your company name?

When I first launched my Etsy store I offered two types of products: macramé and mirrored pieces. So my company name is a "play on words" that incorporates the knots of macramé and disco in the mirrored pieces.

Funny! Please tell us how you got started?

Macrame.jpg

The Knotty Disco started as a side hustle while I was still working as a marketing executive for a fashion brand in 2019. I would create pieces after work and on the weekends. In March 2020, when COVID-19 hit, the brand fell apart and the entire company was laid off. Over the next few months I dedicated myself to my Etsy store and made the decision to be a maker full time. It was the best decision I've made. Nothing makes me happier than getting up every day and creating with my hands.

What is your favorite part of your maker process?

Dreaming up new product ideas! I love everything about the creative process when I design new items. It's when I get to use my imagination and all my creative juices!

What inspires you to create?

More like WHO inspires me to create :) Both of my grandmothers as well as my husband inspire me to create every day. My maternal grandmother is also a maker and a plant lover. She worked with ceramics for decades. The love for disco comes from my father's mother. She can still dance to the Bee Gees all night! And my husband who supports me and pushes me to keep dreaming and keep creating.

Disco Planters.jpg

A good support system is everything! What is a typical day like in the studio for you?

Lots of mirrors and lots of knots! Most of my products are made to order on Etsy so I typically will work on my orders for the day and answer any customer questions that come in. My favorite items to make are the planters. I listen to music and get into a groove. It can be tedious work sometimes but I enjoy it! I'm a bit of a perfectionist so each mirror piece is placed with a lot of care.

That requires a lot of patience I am sure! Do you have a favorite item you have created?

My largest planter that I named Ellie is my favorite for sure! I designed the 10 inch size after getting several requests from customers for larger pots. She is definitely a show stopper!

Ellie (FAVORITE).jpg

What do you love most about California? How about Pasadena?!

The sunsets! And our proximity to national parks. My husband and I are big campers and love getting out in nature. I've always admired how Pasadena still feels like a small town while being in a metropolitan city. The little stretch of Downtown is the best!

Yes we love Old Pasadena- so much to do! What will you be bringing to Jackalope?

A little bit of everything from my shop! I will have disco planters, disco hats, macrame plant hangers, terrariums, air plants, tie dye sweaters, stickers and plant trellises.

We can’t wait to see you in person this November 20th & 21st when Jackalope returns to Central Park, Pasadena.

Meet our Sponsors: Brighter Future Charity

Jackalope has been very fortunate to work with Brighter Future Charity since 2017. Brighter Future is a California non-profit that works with children affected by autism. Their organization pairs individuals with autism with skills coaches and volunteers at local events to help learn and practice social and professional skills. What we love about Brighter Future is their desire to help kids explore their creative passion! As they state, everyone has a gift to share.

We have had the pleasure to work with Ray’s Shack, Something Extra Candle Productions, and Vyara’s Art, three entrepreneurs a part of Brighter Future Charity. Since we can’t meet them in person this year, we wanted to give you a look behind their brands.

Ray’s Shack

Tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do:

IMG-4991.jpg

My name is Ray Tate and I sell key chains and jewelry.

Let us know more about your business name - how did you come up with it?

It's called Ray's shack and it's a charity for a brighter future to help kids to find there skills and talent and see how creative I am so they can do it too. I did this to show my lego minecraft videos on my youtube channel, RayTate1.

Ray wanted me to sign him up at street fairs so he could pass out a business card directing people to his YouTube channel about his Minecraft LEGO World that he built. I explained to him that the booths cost money and that most of them were for artists that made something. I suggested he use my old jewelry making supplies to create some necklaces. He did his first show with six necklaces. That was four years ago. After three shows, he said “I need to make keychains, people keep telling me they don’t wear jewelry” I was most impressed by this. I sold jewelry at craft fairs for nine years and it never crossed my mind to diversify and I heard that for years. I’m so proud of Ray and how much he has grown. He is quite the salesman and very creative.

il_340x270.2496821046_6uht.jpg

What makes your business unique to the industry?

I take old toys and make key chains and holiday ornaments for a recycled idea and I like doing it.

What is your favorite part of what you do?

See what creative ideas I have to make recycled new jewelry creations from broken and donated jewelry. Finding favorite characters for children and for adult customers to bring back childhood memories.

Something Extra Candle Productions

IMG-4978.JPG

Tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do:

We are lifelong friends and candlemakers who have Down syndrome.

After taking candle classes, we decided to give our own business a shot. We make soy and beeswax candles with hemp wicks.

Let us know more about your business name - how did you come up with it?

Our business name is Something Extra Candle Productions. We were both born with an extra chromosome, so something extra is fitting. We also try to include tea-lights or other small candles with orders.

What makes your business unique to the industry?

il_340x270.2646472034_3b06.jpg

Some of our candles are in unique containers, some are hand painted and some have one of a kind labels we create. We also make labels for customers with personal photos of families, pets, art etc.

What is your favorite part of what you do?

We like being creative, thinking of new ideas and trying to improve!

Vyara’s Art

IMG-4980.jpg

Tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do:

My name is Vyara, and I create original art.

What makes your business unique to the industry?

My business is unique because I create canvases using paint, duct tape, fabrics, acrylic medium, and found objects, that tell stories about characters I created. My canvases are imaginative and colorful, and my stories are particularly unique because I’m on the autism spectrum, so my imagination and perspective is unique.

il_794xN.2695831315_s2uj.jpg

What is your favorite part of what you do?

My favorite part about creating art is seeing my imagination come to life, and sharing my stories with others.

Things to do in The City of Roses

Pasadena has been home to Jackalope for over 5 years now. In that time we’ve grown quite fond of the city and the things that make it so unique and easy to love.

Here are a few of our faves:

NEXT UP:

APRIL 25TH & 26TH
10AM - 5PM

CENTRAL PARK
275 S RAYMOND AVE, PASADENA CA 91105

The Rose Parade

image.png

One of the things Pasadena is the most famous for has got to be the Rose Parade.

Insider tip - skip the cold and early morning, and go check out the floats up close after the parade has finished when they’re all parked for public viewing on Sierra Madre Blvd.

Hike Eaton Canyon

image.png

It’s always a mystery if there’s going to be a small trickle or a decent sized waterfall at the end of your hike. You won’t know until you get there!

The Huntington Library

huntington-1024x382.jpg

Nothing beats those gardens! Fun fact, the final phase of the Huntington’s Garden of Flowing Fragrance will make it one of the largest classical-style Chinese gardens in the world!

Explore Old Pasadena

image.png

Spend the afternoon shopping in Old Pasadena, where there’s a little bit of everything. Some of our favorite shops to check out: Gold Bug, Homage, and all of the cute spots within One Colorado’s cute courtyard.

Pasadena Playhouse

image.png

Mixing up some weekend activities with a live play at the Playhouse can be a great time for all. Pasadena Playhouse hosts events throughout the year in their beautiful theatre in the heart of Pasadena.

Grab A Bite To Eat

image.png

Pasadena has such a wide variety of food and drink options. Here are a few faves in different categories:

Me + Crepe is a wonderful twist on crepes. This Chinese street food is not to be missed. One spicy bbq pork crepe, please.

Eats on Madison (Formerly Kitchen United) has a little something for everyone. Best place for the family where no one can agree on what to eat. It’s takeout style, but there are tables to sit at should you want to eat on-site. Grab yourself a grilled cheese with a side of spicy tuna crispy rice while your buddy enjoys a gyro. Everyone’s happy.

Architecture

image.png

If you are a sucker for architecture, then take a ride through Pasadena and you will not be disappointed. From City Hall, to Frank Lloyd Wright and The Gamble House designed by Greene & Greene- Pasadena is full of architectural gems.

Norton Simon Museum

image.png

Previously known as the Pasadena Art Museum, the museum houses more then 11,000 objects making it known internationally.

Rose Bowl Flea

Screen Shot 2020-02-05 at 1.37.55 PM.png

When we want to go thrifting or score some vintage treasures, we look no further then to go to the Rose Bowl Flea. Happening the second Sunday of every month, the Rose Bowl flea is one of the most famous markets in the world.

Colorado Street Bridge

Screen Shot 2020-02-05 at 1.43.23 PM.png

I think one of the most beautiful views is from the Colorado Street Bridge! With its arches rising 150 feet, it was once regarded the highest concrete bridge in the world. I also may have a soft spot for it because the bridge was featured in Full House during a bungee jumping scene!

Fun Facts About Our Cities

As we gear up for our sixth year, we want to celebrate the cities we call home with some interesting facts about each of them.

The Cheeseburger Legend

Rumored to have been created in 1924 by a 16 year old at his father’s restaurant, The Rite Spot, in Pasadena.

However, the name “cheeseburger” was trademarked in 1935 in Denver CO.

So… where did the cheeseburger really originate? Pasadena, Denver, or somewhere in between? One thing we know is, it probably wasn’t in Burbank.

Holidays in our cities

Every New Year is marked with the famous Rose Parade in Pasadena. Ever since it began, organizers have promised never to hold the parade on a Sunday in exchange with a pact with God that it not rain out the parade. In it’s 130 years, the parade has yet to be rained out!

Later in the year, where can you find one of the largest St. Patricks day parades? I bet you did not know that Denver has one of the largest parades in the country! Celebrate Irish culture and the start of Spring.

We are all about supporting local artisans and we would consider Norton's Winter Wonderland in Burbank as one of them! This fabulous Christmas display has been going on for more than 50 years. There are more than a dozen handmade displays including a ferris wheel, see-saw, train, angels, and carousel within.

Historic Locations

Pasadena Ice House is the oldest comedy club in the US. It’s also home to the first ever Trader Joe’s (with the world’s tiniest parking lot), and Vroman’, the longest independent bookstore which has been open for over 120 years.

The oldest remaining Bob’s Big Boy is in Burbank and was officially declared a historic landmark in 1993.

Meanwhile, Denver is home to the unsinkable Molly Brown’s house! The activist and philanthropist who survived the historical sinking of the Titanic.

On the big screen

Home to three major motion picture studios, Burbank could be named the movie capital of the world. It is also home to Walt Disney Animation studios who released the first fully animated film, 1937’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs!

Pasadena plays home to many on the big screen: The Gamble House = Doc Brown’s house in Back to the Future, Pasadena City Hall = HQ for Parks and Rec, Pasadena Central Library = The Law Library in Legally Blonde, and many more!

We can’t count Denver out though- Die Hard 2 was filmed at the old Stapleton Airport, and the stadium in Blades of Glory is the Pepsi Center. Yippee-ki-yay!

Animals

What’s with the squawking? Wild parrots fill Pasadena and urban legend has it that the exotic flock began with birds that escaped a burning pet store, or were released from Busch Gardens when it closed.

You wouldn’t expect horseback riding to be so popular in the middle of the city, but Burbank is home to a large equestrian park and provides over 50 miles of trails!

Denver is the city of dogs. No, really! It was reported that Denver has more dogs than children. There were about 158,000 dogs in Denver, and only 140,000 children according to the last U.S Census.
