Support BIPOC Artisans: with Local Undercover

One of our favorite things about Local Undercover and our Virtual Market platform is the increased accessibility of shopping small and supporting handmade artisans from the comfort of your home year round. The ability to feature and provide a place for artisans and makers from all over to sell their wares makes us so happy.

When we launched Local Undercover we wanted to continue to help spotlight black, indigenous and people of color who make up our handmade community. For this reason, we created a gift guide solely dedicated to these BIPOC artisans. Here are some of our favorite picks:

The Balm Shop: An indie-beauty company with a humanitarian heart who provides general and feminine hygiene supplies with their L.O.V.E Works project. Find clean and conscious skincare products including natural deodorant, facial steams, bath soaks, and more.

Meet our Sponsors: Plant Grow Eat

We are very excited to have Plant Grow Eat as a part of our Virtual Holiday Market! We love the idea behind her garden kits and we want you to get to know her better.

Tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do:

Whitney: Plant Grow Eat

Whitney: Plant Grow Eat

My name is Whitney Wade, and I’m the owner of Plant Grow Eat.  I started by building, installing and maintaining home, organic food gardens in the Los Angeles area. I also teach organic gardening at 3 local elementary schools, and I’m excited to get even more people growing with our garden kits and more at plantgroweat.com, which is what I’m currently promoting with Jackalope!  I worked in the entertainment industry for years, but I finally broke away and started Plant Grow Eat 5 years ago. I’ve loved growing food since I was a kid, as an apartment dweller with a community plot in my own yard, and volunteering at my kids’ school.  It was a natural and joyful transition.  I love getting people growing, teaching kids, and helping everyone to know that growing organic food is something that anyone can do, whether you have a yard of your own, a balcony or even a sunny window.

Let us know more about your business name - how did you come up with it?

Plant Grow Eat was originally the tagline to the business’ initial name — Frontyard Feast.  The intention was, and still is, to promote the community of growing food.  I started my own home garden in my front yard, and I’ve never met so many neighbors and taken the opportunity to share harvests and recipes and prepared dishes.  I’ll admit though, that “Frontyard Feast” limited peoples’ understanding of growing food anywhere, so I simplified to Plant Grow Eat, highlighting the cycle and intention of growing and eating food.

What makes your business unique to the industry?

F7725CD0-A51D-497A-8B3F-29FC643B964E.jpeg

I learned early on to allow for my initial business vision to evolve.  I’ve found various needs that weren’t part of what I’d originally planned, and I’ve been thrilled to focus on teaching kids and families, as well as well as promoting the message that anyone can grow, which is healthy for mind, body AND the planet.  It also provides a connection between people and the Earth that is so important right now.  Once you’re a part of the Plant Grow Eat community, I make it my personal goal for you to be a success at growing organic food.  I’ve found that there’s a “plant and leave” aspect that is prevalent with other garden services, and I’m available via multiple platforms to answer questions and provide advice whenever you need.

What is your favorite part of what you do?

As I mentioned earlier, connecting with people but then also connecting people to each other, to growing food and to the larger planet have provided more reward than I could have imagined.  I especially love working with kids, teaching them to plant food, then take care of it as it grows, then the ultimate reward of kids taking pride in what they’ve grown, spurring their curiosity to taste and realizing that they like vegetables…  It’s the best.  The adult version of this is teaching people that they don’t have black thumbs and to not be afraid of growing food, maybe even failing but then trying again, helping them to find and feel success.  Again, I’m here for you!

How has your business had to adapt amidst the Covid-19 Pandemic? What are you doing to navigate the situation?

CBE0FDF8-1524-46CF-85F6-6F8B4C012191.jpeg

Something that I was planning just before we all shut down was providing video garden lesson subscriptions.  But with people feeling a bigger need to grow their own food, I’ve actually started utilizing social media to answer questions and give free garden lessons in my “Weekends in the Garden” series on Instagram Live, Saturday mornings.  I’m also putting together a bigger community hub on plantgroweat.com, that I’m excited to launch at the end of November, where there will be a community Q&A area, access to video lessons, recipes and more.  My goal is to bring people together, even if it can’t be in-person.  I’m also excited to provide garden kits and supplies, available in my online shop, that, again, come with me as your guide.  Thinking in this way vs. how I can monetize everything has actually been a silver lining to the pandemic that has been a happy evolution and very fulfilling as a fellow human.  Let’s get growing!  Because we’re in this together!

Meet our Sponsors: Brighter Future Charity

Jackalope has been very fortunate to work with Brighter Future Charity since 2017. Brighter Future is a California non-profit that works with children affected by autism. Their organization pairs individuals with autism with skills coaches and volunteers at local events to help learn and practice social and professional skills. What we love about Brighter Future is their desire to help kids explore their creative passion! As they state, everyone has a gift to share.

We have had the pleasure to work with Ray’s Shack, Something Extra Candle Productions, and Vyara’s Art, three entrepreneurs a part of Brighter Future Charity. Since we can’t meet them in person this year, we wanted to give you a look behind their brands.

Ray’s Shack

Tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do:

IMG-4991.jpg

My name is Ray Tate and I sell key chains and jewelry.

Let us know more about your business name - how did you come up with it?

It's called Ray's shack and it's a charity for a brighter future to help kids to find there skills and talent and see how creative I am so they can do it too. I did this to show my lego minecraft videos on my youtube channel, RayTate1.

Ray wanted me to sign him up at street fairs so he could pass out a business card directing people to his YouTube channel about his Minecraft LEGO World that he built. I explained to him that the booths cost money and that most of them were for artists that made something. I suggested he use my old jewelry making supplies to create some necklaces. He did his first show with six necklaces. That was four years ago. After three shows, he said “I need to make keychains, people keep telling me they don’t wear jewelry” I was most impressed by this. I sold jewelry at craft fairs for nine years and it never crossed my mind to diversify and I heard that for years. I’m so proud of Ray and how much he has grown. He is quite the salesman and very creative.

il_340x270.2496821046_6uht.jpg

What makes your business unique to the industry?

I take old toys and make key chains and holiday ornaments for a recycled idea and I like doing it.

What is your favorite part of what you do?

See what creative ideas I have to make recycled new jewelry creations from broken and donated jewelry. Finding favorite characters for children and for adult customers to bring back childhood memories.

Something Extra Candle Productions

IMG-4978.JPG

Tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do:

We are lifelong friends and candlemakers who have Down syndrome.

After taking candle classes, we decided to give our own business a shot. We make soy and beeswax candles with hemp wicks.

Let us know more about your business name - how did you come up with it?

Our business name is Something Extra Candle Productions. We were both born with an extra chromosome, so something extra is fitting. We also try to include tea-lights or other small candles with orders.

What makes your business unique to the industry?

il_340x270.2646472034_3b06.jpg

Some of our candles are in unique containers, some are hand painted and some have one of a kind labels we create. We also make labels for customers with personal photos of families, pets, art etc.

What is your favorite part of what you do?

We like being creative, thinking of new ideas and trying to improve!

Vyara’s Art

IMG-4980.jpg

Tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do:

My name is Vyara, and I create original art.

What makes your business unique to the industry?

My business is unique because I create canvases using paint, duct tape, fabrics, acrylic medium, and found objects, that tell stories about characters I created. My canvases are imaginative and colorful, and my stories are particularly unique because I’m on the autism spectrum, so my imagination and perspective is unique.

il_794xN.2695831315_s2uj.jpg

What is your favorite part of what you do?

My favorite part about creating art is seeing my imagination come to life, and sharing my stories with others.

Paper Arboretum

I enjoy going for walks in my neighborhood. The bright floral colors and fresh smells draw me close to the gardens and the carefully landscaped foliage next to buildings. I find the leaf of a simple bush to contain extraordinary beauty and complexity. During my walks I collect leaves or petals, some directly from a plant or some that have fallen to the ground. In my studio I scan and enlarge them. I alter the image to form original shapes that become pinwheels, and ensure that astonishing patterns of leaves and petals are revealed.

I can remember, as a little boy, my Nana's house always smelled of delicious cookies.  I grew up eating the best cookies in the world baked with love by my Nana.  I would stand in her kitchen watching her bake cookies for me and my brothers.  I never saw her use a recipe.  When I got older my Nana taught me how to bake her delicious cookies.  She told me, "we bake all our cookies with a pinch of this, a little bit more of that, and the most important ingredient is LOVE". I  listened to my Nana and have been baking Walter's Cookies for my family and friends just like Nana did for me - with LOVE. Now, I'm baking Walter's Cookies for you.
